We only have a stereo mix. Can me make a 5.1 festival version?

We need to unlock picture lock for a different festival version.

How do we keep the audio consistent?

Sometimes, but it all really depends on your source material.

Did you keep the dialogue, music, effects, sound design and ambience all separated in the mix? This is the best situation where a remix from your stems or an AAF can provide the best possible mix environment for a 5.1 mix.

If you only have a stereo mix that you are looking to upmix it may be possible, but wouldnt be the same precision and quality as a full surround mix.

Send your current mix and available audio elements. I’ll review whether stereo, 5.1, or an upmix makes the most sense.

Dialogue is noisy, uneven and hard to hear at spots. Can it still be festival ready?

Often, yes. Real-world production audio can have room noise, clothing rustle, camera noise, hum, wind, inconsistent mic levels.

I can clean up dialogue, reduce noise where possible, smooth room tone, balance levels, and improve clarity before the final mix.

Send a sample of the problem audio, production audio (if available) and deadline and I’ll tell you what can realistically be improved.

Festival versions often change after the first mix. You may need a shorter runtime, a new ending, revised credits, edited music, removed scenes, new title cards, or a different intro. If those changes are not tracked carefully, the audio can fall out of sync, old mix decisions can get lost, and the new export may not match the approved version.

I can help conform the audio to the new picture version, compare and properly track the old and new cuts with the editor, update the Pro Tools session, revise the mix, and export consistent new deliverables.

We used temp music. Can you replace it for festival delivery?

Yes. Temp music can create clearance problems and distract from the overall cohesiveness of the film. Stock library music can work in some cases, but has likely been used in lots of other projects which can make the film feel less original or less connected. If you didnt use stock images for your film, why would you use stock music?

I can help replace temp music with original music cues, royalty-free music from our library, remix existing cues or help source artists to provide original music. From original music to music supervision, I can ensure you have all the proper licenses, contracts, recordings and cue sheets to make sure all music is cleared.

I got into a film festival! How to I get my audio mix to their specifications?

Festival acceptance is exciting, but it can also expose audio problems not obvious during the edit. Your film can be shown on different audio setups from small screenings with a couple PA speakers to large theatres with surround sound in a DCP. You will get asked for different exports for each festival so need to be ready to convert both the video and audio to meet each festivals unique requirements.

I can review your current cut, work with you to identify the biggest audio issues, clean up dialogue, balance music, add sound design where needed, and prepare and master a final stereo or 5.1 mix to make sure you are meeting festival specs and deadlines
